Story behing TULIPS

•March 9, 2009 • 4 Comments

This is a custom song I wrote for a couple in Kentucky.  They’ve been married since September 2007, but Valentine’s Day is a sort of anniversary for them.  He was her secret admirer, and asked her out by sending a vase of tulips to her work.  She’s a part-time seminary student at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY and one of their first conversations was about how much they both despised a doctrine popular at the seminary called Five Point Calvinism, which is known for its acronym TULIP, T-total depravity, U-unconditional election, L-limited atonement, I-irresistable grace, and P-perseverence of the saints.

To make a long story short, the message he sent her in the vase of tulips said, “T.U.L.I.P.S from Calvin,” which she thought was clever.  In that first conversation, they also talked about not liking other things going on in both of their worlds.  They both like to do bible studies at church and volunteer for charities and also like to take a hip-hop dance class together–even though they don’t think they are the greatest dancers.

I wrote the song from his perspective as if he attached it with the first tulips he sent.  He wanted in on her real world.  He wanted her to open up and be real with him.  Hope this sheds a little light on the song 🙂
Lyrics:

Hey baby let me dry your tears tonight
Let me know Let me know

Everytime we get together we be feelin alright
And evertime I come around she be diggin my vibe
And everynight we get together we be glowin alive
With this music and tulips

Hey baby let me dry your tears tonight
Let me know let me know (let me know girl)
Tell me everything going on in your life
Let me know let me know (let me know girl)

Don’t make believe we’re not seventeen anymore
Let me know girl (know girl)
You can’t make me think we’re on a movie screen
Let me in on your real world (real world)

New single up on iTunes today!  It’s a custom song I wrote for a couple’s valentines day this year.  It’s an interesting story.  I’ll have to share it with you sometime soon.  For now just enjoy the tune and lyrics:

Lyrics to TULIPS:

Hey baby let me dry your tears tonight

Everytime we get together we be feelin alright
And evertime I come around she be diggin my vibe
And everynight we get together we be glowin alive
With this music and tulips

Let me know let me know (let me know girl)
Tell me everything going on in your life

I went on a walk in the woods today and an owl followed me.  i don’t speak owl so I’m not sure what was said but I’m pretty sure he was befriending me.  Then again he may have just wanted to eat me.  Maybe he was trying to give me some lyrics? Speaking of which I finished a song today for a church in North Carolina.

It’s hard to put into words feelings when someone close to you dies unexpectedly.  Ron played bass for story side b and we toured a lot together.  Ron was a stud.  I talked with him a couple weeks ago and asked him if he had been working out and he said he had been doing cardio but not lifting cuz he puts on too much muscle.  He looked like a professional football player!  He loved God and life.  He cared about others and was easy to talk to.   I don’t know much about how he died other than he was playing ball and passed out.  It’s sobering really.  Life is so fragile.  It makes me think about the end and if some of the things I’m doing now are really that significant.  Please say a prayer for Ron, his wife, family, band and friends.  Heaven got richer.

16coverblog

I met Kelsey and her mom Sherri last summer in Texas at “Rock The Desert” a festival I was playing at.  Months later when Sherri saw I was offering custom songs she ordered one for her daughter. I’ve been writing songs for people, fans, and friends for about a year now.  This one is special to me because it’s the first one I recorded in my new studio.  It’s also the first song Jeff Frankenstein and I worked on together.  I met Jeff this summer on the same flight to that festival where his band The Newsboys was headlining.  He added some keys and did the mix to this song!

When someone orders a song I ask them for details about the person they are ordering it for.  On this particular one Sherri gave me the following tidbits of info:

– It would be cool if her Daddy could sing her a song with her name in it.
– She is only 16..just turned 16.
– The sweetest girl in the world.
– She loves Jesus with her whole heart!
– She plays guitar and piano.
– She loves your puma song and mexican food.
– She is home-schooled.
– She is saving her heart for courtship.
– She is pure and kind..a real treasure to her daddy and I…..

So with those facts in mind I began writing.  The chorus came first and I just stumbled upon it improvising and jammin in my room.

chorus lyrics:
She’s only 16 looks like a prom queen
and when she sings she can
light up the room light up the room

And then I started writing the verses.  My friend Terah helped me whenever I got stuck on the verses.  She was also home schooled, plays music and loves God so she could relate I think.

1st verse:
kelsey 16 not yo avg drama queen
she’s got her eyes on the prize
which is serving the king of her heart
he’s her reason her rhyme no matter the season or time
and when life falls apart you gotta stand tall
and dream big i look back to when i was a kid and
that’s what i did i wanted to sing before i wrote a song
so if you like to play piano then just jam along

2nd verse:
if life gets hard cuz it probably will
you gotta trust in God and remain real
and be still and know that he’s in control
even when the rain turns into hail and snow
let go of your worries let go of your pain
know that He remains much bigger than our brain
how can we comprehend Him
He took all of our sins and now we’re forgivin
livin a new beginning

3rd verse:
Jesus captor of her heart inspires her passion and art
guiding her steps from the start and if guys are steppin
they must represent Him
cuz she’s only walking in the Lords direction
so daddy wants to sing a song
so daddy can sing along
it goes k to the e – l – s to the e – y
cmon daddy try cuz it goes like

I emailed the song to Sherri and she wrote back:

“She loves it..I tried to wait til Christmas to give it to her..but couldn’t wait.  It is perfect.  Thanks for your speediness..a blessing to wake up to this morning!”

I Saw The Sun

Today was a productive day. I wrote two custom songs and rootdown had band practice. We jammed on one of the custom song ideas and it sounded sweet! I hope tomorrow is just as good.
